Dear Director Young,
According to the news report yesterday (Nov.19th), you held a press conference pointing out that the UN for Taiwan referendum would cause the uneasiness and instability across the Taiwan Strait, and saying that the intention to hold the referendum to join the U.N. is “neither necessary nor helpful". However, you also asserted that what you’d said didn’t mean that the U.S. government doesn’t support the will for Taiwan to join any international organizations reserved for country alone, but in the meantime you also disagreed China to squeeze out of Taiwan’s international space. Your expressions are contradictory and inconsistent, and we don’t know what or what not to listen to.
Holding referendum to head for the direct democracy is the trend of modern democratic countries. Taiwan is an independent country, and also one of the most democratic and freeest countries in Asia. Facing Chinese political body’s growing military threats and squeezing out Taiwan’s international space, twenty-three million people of Taiwan who are peace-loving are isolated, and our lives and freedom are insecure. Therefore, we have to work hard to make a breakthrough to join the U.N. to earn security and peace from the world.
Because Chinese bigotry uses every means to squeeze out Taiwan’s international space and some appeasers choose to overlook it, Taiwan has no access to be part of the U.N.. It also bereaved people in Taiwan of their participations in the international community and of their responsibilities to take as part of the world, and prevented Taiwanese people from working together with people from other countries to improve world politics, culture, society, economy, health and care for the environment to increase the fairness, justice and welfare of all the human race, and that is the most unfair and unjust thing to do in the world.
Especially, Taiwan is ranked as the 48th most populated country, and has the top 21st GDP in the world. IT industry is considered the 6th of the world; foreign trade and foreign exchange are top ten; chips and TFT-LCD monitors made in Taiwan are regarded as the top of the world; education and training are considered the 4th of the world; health care is in the second place; semi-conductor industry is in the fourth place, patents in USPTO are ranked as the fourth and the percentage of women in the Congress is the highest among Asian countries.
It’ll disgrace the U.N. for its preventing country like us to join it. On December 10th 1948, the U.N. proclaimed “Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, and its first article says that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The U.S. is built based on democracy and freedom, and why people in Taiwan cannot have the rights to embrace democracy, freedom and equality.
Director Young, please forward this message to the U.S. government and tell them that Taiwan, like the U.S., is a peace-loving and democratic country and tell them to respect the freedom of expression of all the Taiwanese people to join the U.N. under the name of Taiwan and the right of people in Taiwan to decide their own future.
Hail for the victory of democracy and the friendship between two countries.
