Stephen M. Young, director of the Taipei Office of the American Institute inTaiwan , openly spoke that it’s “neither necessary nor helpful” for Taiwan to hold the UN for Taiwan referendum. But based on that it’s the basic right of people in Taiwan to referendum, and the common will to join the UN in the name of Taiwan, UN for Taiwan Alliance representing all the Taiwanese groups and associations though feels regretted for the director Young’s succumbing to China’s bigotry, on the other hand refutes his remark that UN for Taiwan referendum will cause uneasiness and instability across the Strait.
Since theU.S. opposes China squeezing out Taiwan ’s international space; since the U.S. understands that Taiwan isn’t part of China and since Taiwan ’s international status hasn’t been defined yet, why Taiwan , as an independent country, can’t hold the referendum to express the common will of people in Taiwan to join the U.N.? Is that as what director Young said will cause uneasiness across the Strait? Isn’t referendum the most democratic and the most peaceful way to express what people think? On the other hand, shouldn’t we regard China ’s setting up thousands of missiles aiming at Taiwan and its anti-secession law as something brutal? Obviously, China is the one to blame for causing the uneasiness and instability across the Strait. UN for Taiwan Alliance asserts that joining the UN under the name of Taiwan is the common will of people in Taiwan , and we won’t falter just because of China or the U.S. ’s opposition.
Meanwhile, we will appeal to all the folks inTaiwan that right and equality are earned by hard works. In order to access to the U.N., and earn the basic right to participate in and take the responsibility of the international community, also for this generation and many generations after to have respect, freedom and happiness, though in the face of China’s threat and squeeze and international appeaser’s disregard and opposition, we should lift our spirits up, believing that God helps those who help themselves, and firmly holds each others’ hands. In the presidential election on March 2008, please vote for joining the U.N. in the name of Taiwan to show the firm will and power of people in Taiwan .
